Hac\u00eda mucho tiempo que no me invitaban a un juego en blogs, de aquellos que se jugaban tanto a principios de este siglo (ser\u00e1 que ahora es m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil el \u00abOla k ase\u00bb y otros por el estilo)…, y ahora Raquel Castro acaba de enviarme una invitaci\u00f3n<\/a>: contestar el cuestionario llamado \u00abThe Next Big Thing\u00bb, que tiene que ver con los nuevos proyectos en los que uno se encuentre trabajando. No puedo decir casi nada del siguiente proyecto de gran tama\u00f1o, que est\u00e1 apenas en estado embrionario, pero me animo porque antes de \u00e9l, mucho m\u00e1s cerca, hay al menos algo peque\u00f1o<\/em>: una historia breve hecha por puro placer.<\/p>\n

A continuaci\u00f3n respondo las preguntas en espa\u00f1ol e ingl\u00e9s (el juego permitir\u00e1, tal vez, que alg\u00fan lector de habla inglesa llegue hasta aqu\u00ed) y agrego la invitaci\u00f3n de rigor a tres personas a responder tambi\u00e9n en sus propias bit\u00e1coras y continuar la cadena: la dejo para Gabriela Dami\u00e1n<\/a>, Miguel Lupi\u00e1n<\/a> y Pok Manero<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\nNo es un t\u00edtulo provisional a estas alturas: se llama Las Ciudades Latinas<\/i>.<\/p>\n

2. \u00bfDe d\u00f3nde te lleg\u00f3 la idea para el libro?<\/strong>
\nHe escrito muchas historias alrededor de un personaje llamado Horacio Kustos, incluyendo varias en su cuenta de Twitter (@hkustos); una serie de peque\u00f1as vi\u00f1etas hechas ah\u00ed me dio la idea de una historia que las unificara, y que fuera m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de las series de peque\u00f1as minificciones o tuits que se han vuelto populares \u00faltimamente.<\/p>\n

3. \u00bfEn qu\u00e9 g\u00e9nero cae tu libro?<\/strong>
\nCuento de imaginaci\u00f3n (dir\u00eda cuento fant\u00e1stico pero no tiene mucho que ver con lo que la mayor\u00eda de las personas asocia con esa palabra).<\/p>\n

4. \u00bfQu\u00e9 actores elegir\u00edas para hacer una versi\u00f3n cinematogr\u00e1fica de tu libro?<\/strong>
\nSer\u00eda un cortometraje rar\u00edsimo: mejor que Jan Svankmajer o alguien as\u00ed lo animara con mu\u00f1ecos de madera\u2026<\/p>\n

5. \u00bfCu\u00e1l ser\u00eda la sinopsis de una l\u00ednea de tu libro?<\/strong>
\nHoracio Kustos (buscador de lo extra\u00f1o) visita un pa\u00eds con ciudades llamadas como las letras del alfabeto.<\/p>\n

6. \u00bfQui\u00e9n publica tu libro? \/ \u00bfSer\u00e1 un libro autopublicado o representado por una agencia?<\/strong>
\nComo es un cuento solo (o una serie de cuentos entrelazados), y como vivo en el tercer mundo, dudo mucho que algo as\u00ed interesara a un agente. Lo publicar\u00e1, solo, la revista Armas y Letras<\/i>, de Monterrey, en una serie de breves plaquettes<\/i> o separatas. Tal vez m\u00e1s adelante sea parte de un libro mayor.<\/p>\n

7. \u00bfCu\u00e1nto te tom\u00f3 escribir el primer borrador del manuscrito?<\/strong>
\nUn mes.<\/p>\n

8. \u00bfCon qu\u00e9 libros del mismo g\u00e9nero comparar\u00edas tu historia?<\/strong>
\nComo es un divertimento sobre la misma idea de las series que se ve en Las ciudades invisibles<\/i> de Italo Calvino, me gusta pensar en ese precedente. Tambi\u00e9n, en el resto de las aventuras de Horacio Kustos (El \u00faltimo explorador<\/i> y La torre y el jard\u00edn<\/i>; y los que vendr\u00e1n).<\/p>\n

9. \u00bfQui\u00e9n o qu\u00e9 te inspir\u00f3 a escribir este libro?<\/strong>
\nNecesitaba comenzar de nuevo despu\u00e9s de haber terminado, el a\u00f1o pasado, con todos los proyectos que ten\u00eda pendientes. Por primera vez en a\u00f1os no ten\u00eda nada nuevo, nada en proceso. Esta historia es parte del proceso de seguir adelante.<\/p>\n

10. \u00bfQu\u00e9 m\u00e1s del libro podr\u00eda picar la curiosidad de los lectores?<\/strong>
\n\u00c9sta es una historia sobre el descubrimiento del mundo, sobre una vida que cambia, sobre ciudades extra\u00f1as y sobre el deseo de la aventura.<\/p>\n

The Next Big Thing<\/em><\/p>\n

1. What is the working title of your next book?<\/strong>
\nAt this point it\u2019s not a working title anymore: it\u2019s called The Latin Cities<\/em>.<\/p>\n

2. Where did the idea come from for the book?<\/strong>
\nI\u2019ve written a lot of stories featuring a character called Horatio Kustos, including several flash-fictions published on his Twitter account (@hkustos): a series of small vignettes I posted there gave me the idea of a story to unify them, and to go beyond the typical form of the series of tweet-stories that\u2019s become popular in recent years.<\/p>\n

3. What genre does your book fall under?<\/strong>
\nI\u2019d say it\u2019s a fantasy story, but the label may be misleading, because it comes from the English-speaking literary industry and my story wouldn\u2019t fit there. Let\u2019s call it a brief tale of imagination. A weird fiction.<\/p>\n

4. What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?<\/strong>
\nAs it is<\/i> brief, and weird, it should be an animated short film by Jan Svankmajer or someone like him, using wooden puppets.<\/p>\n

5. What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?<\/strong>
\nHoratio Kustos (seeker of the strange) visits a country in which cities are named as the letters of the alphabet.<\/p>\n

6. Who is publishing your book? Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?<\/strong>
\nAs it is just one story (or a series of small, interconnected ones), and as I live in the Third World, I doubt an agent would be interested in it. It will be published by a Monterrey based magazine, Armas y Letras<\/em>, as part of a chapbook collection. Maybe it will be part of a larger book later on.<\/p>\n

7. How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?<\/strong>
\nA month.<\/p>\n

8. What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?<\/strong>
\nBecause this was written just for fun, and it echoes the series used by Italian writer Italo Calvino in Invisible Cities<\/i>, that\u2019s a definite precedent. There are also the other adventures I\u2019ve written for Kustos (in my books The Last Explorer<\/em> and The Tower and the Garden<\/em>).<\/p>\n

9. Who or what inspired you to write this book?<\/strong>
\nI needed to begin writing again after having finished, last year, every project I had. Fort he first time in years I had nothing new, nothing \u201ccooking\u201d. This story is part of my process of restarting myself and moving on.<\/p>\n

10. What else about the book might pique the reader\u2019s interest?<\/strong>
